Compulsory American Exceptionalism

America is special.  I believe this.  I have a spritual conviction that our founders were inspired by God, and that documents such as the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution embody and resolve to protect inherent, God-given rights.  The liberty and prosperity that flourished in our country as a result of such a foundation are evident.  Blessings flowed to overflowing.  God restored His church.  And latter-day revelation in the Doctrine and Covenants explicitly states that the Lord raised up the founders for that very purpose.

Our system of government and freedom shone like a beacon across a dark world.  What a wonderful thing to export such liberty and prosperity to other nations, even all nations.  This I also believe.

But I feel many may be decieved.

Many members of the church think this is precisely what America is justifiably and currently doing – spreading American exceptionalism – democracy – freedom.  A conversation I had with a very intelligent member highlights my piont.  When we came across the idea of how exceptional America is with its inherent goodness, he asked me (in reference to my missionary service) “didn’t you once go out to a foreign land to share with others what you knew to be right and true?”  My response: “Yes, but I didn’t carry a gun.  And I didn’t make anyone else pay for it.”

I’ve personally engaged in both types of missions – church missionary, and armed military in a warzone.  So I’ve felt what both feel like.  And I’m driven back to D&C 121:41 which states: “No power or influence can or ought to be maintained by virtue of the priesthood, only by persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned;”  Persuasion, gentleness, meekness, and love; weapons and force by redistribution of wealth doesn’t appear to fit into the Lord’s program.

Current American Exceptionalism usually proceeds as follows: Our armed forces attack and occupy another country, and if anyone resists, they are either slain or interned as detainees, and labelled “terrorists.”  We are at war after all – the war on terror.  We treat our cause and method as just and righeous.  I see a terrorist in here somewhere with our current method, but I’m not so sure the label landed on the right party.  In this manner, we spread “democracy,” a word misused nowadays anyway – the Founders were quite hostile to the word.  We were given a representative republic, with rights that should not be able to be contracted away as part of the “social contract.”  That is why they’re listed in the Bill of Rights.

Such American Exceptionalism at the point of a gun is nothing other than the wrong side of the War in Heaven, fighting against the liberty to choose (agency) – here in the flesh down on Earth.  I feel scriptural doctrine supports and encourages American exceptionalism, accomplished through persuasion, gentlness, and love.  Diplomacy, trade, exchange, education, and collaboration all fit into that plan.  Sanctions, no-fly zones, bombs, and bullets – don’t.  Weapons and compulsion cannot be used to preach the gospel, spiritual OR political.

This particular issue is alive and well in this year of 2012.  Let us study dilligently, and not forget the revealed doctrines of God.  And as we do our part to “recieve the Holy Ghost,” we can avoid being decieved as those mentioned in Matthew 24:24, “insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”

  1. You are 100% correct. What the U.S. is doing is Satan’s way. But what do you expect from a nation that has fully embraced Socialism. Socialism is Satan’s counterfeit plan to the gospel plan and a corrupt tree cannot have good fruit.

President David O. McKay said that communism is Satan’s counterfeit for the gospel plan.

“President Marion G. Romney, in the First Presidency Message in the September 1979 Ensign, wrote: ‘Communism is Satan’s counterfeit for the gospel plan, and … it is an avowed enemy of the God of the land. Communism is the greatest anti-Christ power in the world today and therefore the greatest menace not only to our peace but to our preservation as a free people. By the extent to which we tolerate it, accommodate ourselves to it, permit ourselves to be encircled by its tentacles and drawn to it, to that extent we forfeit the protection of the God of this land’” (p. 5). President Ezra Taft Benson Of the Council of the Twelve, A Witness and a Warning

“These subtle entreaties make Satan the great imitator, the master deceiver, the arch counterfeiter, and the great forger. Agency—Our Alternative: Our agency, given us through the plan of our Father, is the great alternative to Satan’s plan of force.” James E. Faust, Second Counselor in the First Presidency , “The Forces That Will Save Us,” Liahona, Jan 2007, 2–7

“President Joseph F. Smith described one of Satan’s methods: ‘Satan is a skillful imitator, and as genuine gospel truth is given the world in ever-increasing abundance, so he spreads the counterfeit coin of false doctrine.’” Apostle Dallin H. Oaks, “Our Strengths Can Become Our Downfall,” Liahona, May 1995, 10

“Satan tries to counterfeit the work of God, and by doing this he may deceive many.” Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Point of Safe Return,” Ensign, May 2007, 99–101

Message from the First Presidency, Improvement Era, August 1936, p. 488.
“Latter-day Saints cannot be true to their faith and lend aid, encouragement, or sympathy to false ideologies such as socialism and communism. The official Church position on communism remains unchanged since it was first promulgated in 1936: ‘We call upon all Church members completely to eschew Communism. The safety of our divinely inspired Constitutional government and the welfare of our Church imperatively demand that Communism shall have no place in America.'”

    President Romney prayed:
“And now in line with these remarks for three things I pray:
“(1) That the Lord will somehow quicken our understanding of the differences between socialism and the United Order and give us a vivid awareness of the awful portent of those differences.
“(2) That we will develop the understanding, the desire, and the courage born of the Spirit, to eschew socialism and to support and sustain, in the manner revealed and as interpreted by the Lord, those just and holy principles embodied in the Constitution of the United States for the protection of all flesh, in the exercise of their God-given agency.
“(3) That through faithful observance of the principles of tithing, the fast, and the welfare program, we will prepare ourselves to redeem Zion and ultimately live the United Order.”
    – Elder Marion G. Romney General Conference, April 1966

How many Mormons honestly “eschew Socialism”? Does the read know of any? If not then you have not met me.

The majority of the members of the Church have embraced socialism and Marxism. They get Social Security numbers and benefits. They embrace the voluntary income tax, Marxism’s 2nd plank. They call Federal Reserve Notes dollars (5th plank). They send their children to government propaganda mills (10th plank). So of course many members support the armed Christian forcing liberty by murder upon other nations. They have become a part of the corrupt tree and so their fruit is corrupt.

    After all…History repeats.

Helaman 6:38 And it came to pass on the other hand, that the Nephites did build them up and support them, beginning at the more wicked part of them, until they had overspread all the land of the Nephites, and had seduced the more part of the righteous until they had come down to believe in their works and partake of their spoils, and to join with them in their secret murders and combinations.

When we accept the socialist benefits (“partake of their spoils”) and we support foreign undeclared wars (“join with them in their secret murders”) we have become Gadianton Robbers. We have been seduced. President Benson called it being lead carefully down to hell.

“Viewing all of these things it will be easy for you to understand that the Church has not found it possible to follow along the lines of the present general tendency in the matter of property rights, taxes, the curtailment of rights and liberties of the people, nor in general the economic policies of what is termed the “New Deal”. … This we feel we can definitely say, that unless the people of America forsake the sins and the errors, political and otherwise, of which they are now guilty and return to the practice of the great fundamental principles of Christianity, and of Constitutional government, there will be no exaltation for them spiritually, and politically we shall lose our liberty and free institutions…. The Church as a Church does not believe in war and yet since its organization whenever war has come we have done our part…. we do thoroughly believe in building up our home defenses to the maximum extent necessary, but we do not believe that aggression should be carried on in the name and under the false cloak of defense… Faithfully yours, /s/ Heber J. Grant, J. Reuben Clark, Jr., David O. McKay. (First Presidency letter to U.S. Treasury, September 30, 1941 AD)

“[T]here will be no exaltation for them spiritually…”?

“Latter-day Saints cannot be true to their faith and lend aid, encouragement, or sympathy to false ideologies such as socialism and communism.”?

The truth is clear. The prophets have been very clear. This truth is also terrifying to most members of the Church because most of them “lend aid, encouragement, or sympathy to false ideologies such as socialism.” Mitt Romney is dyed in the wool practicing missionary of Socialism. So, unless the First Presidency was wrong, “there will be no exaltation for them spiritually…”

If I have made an error in my reasoning or if the Church’s doctrine on Socialism, Communism, or the New Deal has been officially changed in a written statement by the First Presidency PLEASE let me know. I have been unable to find such a change in this official doctrine and I have been researching it for 15 years for Religious Freedom Restoration Act legal defense against the federal government as a professional researcher.

“[T]here will be no exaltation for them spiritually…” and “Latter-day Saints cannot be true to their faith…”

Amen to the priesthood of that man?

    1. To partisan and strident. Let’s begin to listen to other sides. “Socialism” is bandied about in many Mormon circles as terrible. Many live in the nation because of socialism: federal highways, medicaid, medicare, many others that are helping.

      1. The above comment by “William” is not me, the author of the article, Will Toronto.

  2. I agree. We cannot, and we should not force others to follow our way of life. America should let it’s light so shine that others will want to follow. This is a fallen world, and hopefully a good example will be followed.

We cannot and must not try to force others even if our way seems best.

  3. The United States as it stands today is largely Socialist. Anyone who runs for president is running for the country as it is, not for the original republic the Founders set up for us under divine direction. Romney can, and I believe will, take the country back toward the original concept as far as he can. It would be wonderful to undo 100 years of Progressivism in a four year term but that is impossible.

President Obama wants to continue the transformation of America in a second term. Without an election to hold him back he could use his Executive powers without restraint.

I think it is our duty as Latter Day Saints to uphold the Constitution, in whatever state it may be in currently. It’s my personal opinion that a vote for Romney is at the very least a vote to stop the continued rapid destruction of the Constitution.

  4. Romney will do what he is told to do by his masters. He is a part of the global Gadiantons. He proved it as a pro-socialist governor. He proves it on the campaign trail saying he has the power to defend Israel without approval by Congress. He proves it when he supports the Fascist Federal Reserve and its chairman. He proves it when he does not condemn the 2nd plank of the Communist Manifesto, graduated income tax. Romney, throughout his political history has lent aid, encouragement and sympathy to the false ideology of socialism.

Message from the First Presidency, Improvement Era, August 1936, p. 488.
Latter-day Saints cannot be true to their faith and lend aid, encouragement, or sympathy to false ideologies such as socialism and communism. The official Church position on communism remains unchanged since it was first promulgated in 1936: “We call upon all Church members completely to eschew Communism.

Ezra Taft Benson: “We must keep the people informed that collectivism, another word for socialism, is a part of the communist strategy. Communism is essentially socialism.” (This Nation Shall Endure, p. 90)

Our nation will continue to degenerate unless we read and heed the words of the God of this land, Jesus Christ, and quit building up and upholding secret combinations . . . . (Ensign, July 1988, p. 80)

For communism is just another form of socialism, as is fascism. So now you can see the picture. These liberals want you to know how much they are doing for you—with your tax money of course. But they don’t want you to realize that the path they are pursuing is socialistic and that socialism is the same as communism in its ultimate effect on our liberties. When you point this out they want to shut you up, they accuse you of maligning them, of casting aspersions, of being political. No matter whether they label their bottle as liberalism, progressivism, or social reform, I know the contents of the bottle is poison to this Republic and I’m going to call it poison.

Romney is a Socialist. His “fruit” proves it time and again. He is just another bottle is poison to this Republic. So choose the lesser of twin evils if it makes you feel good about your vote but know the truth: Romney is a Socialist.

“Latter-day Saints cannot be true to their faith and lend aid, encouragement, or sympathy to false ideologies such as socialism…” So vote for him and let God judge you for it.
