The episode where Shiloh and Ben talk about liberty and Alma’s missionary efforts to the city of Ammonihah (Alma 8-16). What is the true message of liberty? How does the Book of Mormon instruct us in the higher way of establishing liberty in the land? When Alma was kicked out of the city of Ammonihah the first time, an angel appeared to him and commanded him to return. The angel gave just one reason requiring Alma’s return:
For behold, they [the people of Ammonihah], do study at this time that they may destroy the liberty of thy people, (for thus saith the Lord) which is contrary to the statutes, and judgments, and commandments which he has given unto his people (Alma 8:17; emphasis added).
Every conversation and consequence that transpires afterward between Alma, Amulek, Zeezrum, and the people of Ammonihah necessarily requires us to see these things under the original premise of reaffirming and establishing liberty in the land. The people of Ammonihah offer a fascinating example into the lives of every day Americans today, as the Book of Mormon teaches us the best way of defining and promoting liberty for us to follow.
This is the first of several episodes in a series on Ammonihah, as this podcast comprises a discussion of Alma 8 and 9.
